Research infrastructure
SCAPIS is a nationwide, open, and population-based cohort for the study of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. It is a collaboration between six universities in Sweden; Gothenburg, Malmö/Lund, Stockholm, Uppsala, Linköping and Umeå.
About SCAPIS
In the later part of the 20th century, several population-based studies were initiated in Sweden with the aim of understanding the development of cardiovascular and metabolic (diabetes) disease (e.g. MONICA and VIP in northern Sweden), and these have generated important knowledge. However, the need for modern studies with new techniques including imaging has become apparent. This research initiative eventually led to the SCAPIS study, made possible thanks to the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation.
The SCAPIS study is a unique population-based prospective study with more than 30,000 randomly selected people aged 50-64 years at inclusion (hereafter referred to as SCAPIS 1). The study is a collaboration between Gothenburg, Lund, Linköping, Uppsala and Umeå Universities and Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The study also collaborates with the university hospital at each study site. A pilot project was conducted in Gothenburg in 2012, and data collection from the study's baseline surveys took place between 2013 and 2018.
More information about the different studies conducted can be found on the page: SCAPIS Umeå.
What to do if you want to study on SCAPIS data
It is always best to start by discussing your plans with someone within SCAPIS. Once you are going to apply for data or test material, you need to know what test material and/or data you want.
Extraction of SCAPIS data
Data extraction from central SCAPIS including from the SCAPIS local Umeå survey is administered by the SCAPIS data service (www.scapis.org) and these can be reached via email [email protected].
Sample extraction from SCAPIS Umeå (not researcher's own additions)
Withdrawals of survey data and samples from pre-SCAPIS and of samples from the SCAPIS local sample collection are administered by the Section of Biobank and Registry Support (BRS), and withdrawals are assessed by the relevant expert group. The same procedures as for withdrawals from the NSHDS are applied, i.e. the application must be accompanied by a scientific plan and ethical approval.
Application form and instructions are available under “NSHDS withdrawal”. The application is sent to the Department of Biobank and Registry Support at Umeå University, [email protected].
The local management of Umeå-SCAPIS prepares the case. The relevant expert group at the Department of Biobank and Registry Support makes recommendations to the local management of Umeå-SCAPIS, which decides on the withdrawal.
Fees are paid to the Department of Biobank and Registry Support.
Collection of samples from a researcher's own sample collection
Application form and instructions are available under “NSHDS withdrawal”. The application is sent to the Department of Biobank and Registry Support at Umeå University, [email protected].
The local management of Umeå-SCAPIS decides on the matter in consultation with the researcher who has collected the samples. The decision is communicated in an expert group at the Department of Biobank and Registry Support.
SCAPIS can ask the expert group for an opinion in cases where it wants a balance to be struck, for example if different interests conflict or other doubts arise.
There is no fee to the Biobank and Registry Support Unit.
